    As is the case with most insurance, the insured is the person who pays the premium for renter’s insurance under most conditions.  It could be an interested, benevolent, third person, however, that would not be normal.  Under most circumstances it wouldn’t be the landlord, unless he is using a renter’s policy as an inducement to lease the property.
