When you're unclear about your retirement account, you need to determine a few items. Are you funding your retirement by yourself or through your employer? Are you deducting your contributions? If your funding your retirement yourself and deducting the contributions, you may have an IRA. If money is being withheld beyond the payroll deductions of FICA, FUTA and SUTA then you may have a 401(k).

If your retirement plan is a benefit from your company then the packet that you received when you were hired should give you all the answers. But, if you have lost of misplaced that packet then you should contact your HR department to get the information that you need. It is important that you know where your money is going. In the case of you having a personal retirement plan that you are self-funding then check with your financial advisor or company that set your plan up.
