An automobile insurance company is not required to renew your coverage unless that is guaranteed by the contract.  In California they must notify the driver well in advance of the end of the policy to allow sufficient time for the driver to secure insurance elsewhere.  The most common reason given is driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a word, yes.  There are circumstances, however, that must be justified by the underwriting standards filed by the insurance company with your State's Insurance Department.  Obviously if you don't pay your premium, you will be dropped at the end of the grace period, if your policy has one.  If you receive too many tickets or are responsible for too many chargeable accidents, you may be non-renewed.  If you have an accident and receive a serious infraction ticket that results in your license being suspended, it may also be possible that your company may drop you mid term.

Your auto insurance company can terminate your policy at any time. Of course, if you are considered a reasonable risk, despite a few claims, your chances of being dropped drastically reduce.

An experienced car insurance broker can help alert you to situations that may place you at a higher risk of being cancelled.
