Individuals can buy short term disability at work or through a local agent. Many work site based carriers sell individual policies paid for via payroll deduction. You can only get them at work, but they are fully portable if you separate from your employer. Individual work site policies are most in demand as they do cover normal childbirth.

You can also purchase an individual policy by contacting a local agent and making direct payments to the insurer. The underwriting criteria are more strict, and the policies do not cover normal childbirth.

An individual can buy a short term disability policy, but there are very few choices in the private market. For someone going to a company to buy a disability insurance policy on their own (not through their workplace), you will have many more options to buy long term disability than short term disability insurance.
