Yes, most disability insurance policies pay claims for mental disorders.

However, often times the benefit period for mental disorders is capped at 24 months except in the state of Vermont where limitations are not allowed.  If the benefit is capped, then the benefits will cease once the insured has been paid benefits for the specified period of time (again usually 24 months).

There are some carriers that do not cap (restrict) this benefit.

Remember, Disability is basically insurance on your income. If set up correctly, Disability Insurance will pay a % of your income for qualifying sickness and accidents. Mental Health is considered an illness so if a qualified doctor says your Mental Health illness is preventing you from working, you may qualify to receive benefits.

Talk to your agent about specifics. If you do not have an agent or representative, feel free to reach out to me.

Some policies have limitations on mental health claims while others have full coverage. Some companies will limit claims to mental and nervous disorders to 2 years. It really depends on the company you have.

If you are buying a new policy, be sure to ask an agent if the policy you buy at has "full mental and nervous coverage".
