The benefits of Disability Insurance are paid to the worker who is disabled and unable to perform the duties of his or her regular job. Disability Insurance replaces some of the lost income by paying the cash benefit directly to the employee who has lost wages due to his or her disability.

Individual disability insurance benefits are paid to insured worker listed on the policy. If a business takes out a key man disability insurance policy on an individual, those benefits would be paid to the company, not the employee who is injured.  Also, with business overhead expense disability insurance, depending on the policy, the benefits could go toward a bank (if a loan was involved) or to the business owner (possibly a partner, if not the insured).
