    For active duty, AGR, and ADOS personnel the answer is yes.  Basically whenever you are on orders for more than 30 days.  TRICARE is the military provider and very few things are "out-of-pocket" as long as you stay within their guidelines.  

    Reserves and National Guard have the option to purchase TRICARE for a specified monthly premium.  It changes from year-to-year but it was only a few hundred dollars per month the last time I used it in 2008.  However, compared to most employer plans the premium is relatively low even for a family.
