I was let go but I have pre-existing illness – do they have to cover it still?

    This will all change very soon as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA aka Obamacare) takes effect, but for now this very much depends on if you allow your health insurance coverage to lapse.  If you do not lapse coverage and begin private coverage, then usually a pre-existing condition would be covered.

    If you allowed coverage to lapse and then bought private insurance, it is possible for the insurer to excluse the pre-existing condition. 

    Once PPACA takes effect, pre-existing conditions will no longer be allowed for the most part.
