Only way a homeowners policy would cover your A/C unit would be if it was damaged by a covered claim.  Tree falls on it, home gets struck by lightning or damaged by a house fire are just a few examples of things that could be a covered claim.  If it's just old and stops working, no dice with your home policy.

This is just generally speaking as insurance contracts vary by state and carrier.  Give a local independent agent in your area a call and discuss your specific situation.

Homeowner’s policies cover damages sustained to the residence and personal property from “named perils.”  Mechanical breakdown is not a named peril in very many, if any homeowner’s insurance policies.  If the property is burned and the air conditioner is damaged, then it would be covered.
