Talk to your insurance professional about your home.  A current reconstruction cost analysis can be prepared in order to determine a recommended amount of coverage.  Once that is determined, you can discuss your options and customize your coverage to best suit your needs.  Don't forget to ask about available discounts.

While the actual mechanics of comparing homeowner's policies involves getting quotes from various carriers, the essential question is where are you going to get the information.  You can get it on the internet, newspaper, direct mail or from an insurance agent.  The policies will perform in a similar manner regardless of which insurance company you choose, the problem comes in selecting the correct coverages.  When you are on the internet it is difficult to understand water back-up, or law and ordinance coverages.  It is also difficult to understand what isn't being covered and that lack of knowledge could be your biggest exposure.  Most people just don't know, hopefully your insurance agent does.
