Life insurance isn't any more expense in South Dakota vs. any other state in the United States.  The problem could simply be the type of insurance that you are looking at.

Life insurance is priced based on the type of insurance, the insured's age, and health status.

There is nothing about the state of South Dakota that makes life insurance there more expensive.

Life insurance premiums are based on the age of the insured persons, their health status, gender, tobacco usage, and the type and amount of the life insurance policies they are purchasing. While a life insurance policy in South Dakota might seem expensive compared to the quotes you hear on TV for short term policies for young persons in perfect health, the rates are higher due to these other factors, and not because you live in South Dakota.

To find a less expensive policy in South Dakota, contact an agency that sells a number of companies. You will be able to shop multiple options in one spot and get the most competitive price.
