Medicare HMO insurance plans are a form of Medicare Advantage. With a Medicare Advantage plan you are no longer in original Medicare but in a private form of Medicare. You are limited to using their approved doctors only. When you receive treatment outside of the HMO network you have no coverage, except in the case of a true medical emergency.

HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization.  When you are in an HMO you must stay in a network of doctors and health care providers, otherwise you are not covered unless you have an emergency.  When selecting your Medicare Advantage Plan it is crucial that you make sure your doctors and hospitals are in your network.  Also if you travel outside of your area for a few months out of the year, many Ohio residents have homes in Florida, for example and live in Florida during the winter, make sure your plan has a program that will allow you move your network to that state.  United Healthcare and Aetna have such programs.
