Short term disability plans are normally only available in the work place from your employer. Some employers may provide STD (short term disability) coverage on a particpating or non-participating basis. You may also be able to purchase STD coverage via payroll deduction from carriers like Allstate, Colonial or AFLAC.

You can also obtain private short term disability insurance through an agent, broker, or directly through the company.  Our company recommends Mutual of Omaha for private short (and sometimes long) term disability insurance.  Always keep in mind that you can't necessarily take your work Short term DI policy with you if you leave the company.  It's good to have a backup policy.
