Medicare Part D, otherwise known as the Medicare prescription drug benefit, is a government subsidized program that was part of the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act.  The MMA didn't go into effect however until 2006.  Medicare Part D is available to Individuals as long as they are signed up for Part A and Part B.  Once in force there are two plans to choose from depending on whether there insurance is private or public.

As a rule of thumb, not all medications are covered under Medicare Part D.  In addition, the program delivers a strong incentive to choose generic drugs over name brand drugs.
